Rogue Trader, a game of
exploration and profit in the grim darkness of the far future of
Warhammer 40,000. Modern20 is in print.Kazei 5 the anime-cyberpunk setting for Hero System 6th Edition and Mutants and Masterminds 2nd Edition. 2. Feature - Cyberpunk'd Some of the things we talked about: Literature like the Sprawl Trilogy, Snowcrash, and Jennifer Government. RPGs like Shadowrun, Cyberpunk 2020/Cyberpunk, and SLA Industries. Mass Media like Bubblegum Crisis, Blade Runner, and Ghost in the Shell 3. The Hook Dark Cauldron: A hook for a modern or cyberpunk game, submitted by Chuck. Dark Cauldron is the latest craze in online interactive gaming. In
fact, it's so interactive and addictive that one client, a wealthy
billionaire, wants you to take extreme measures to get his son away
from the game, which he calls a cult.
As a cyberpunk adventure, the game takes place in cyberspace and
the PCs will jack in remotely and attempt a rescue as fantasy avatars
of their normal personas. They will find that the company that runs the
game has dealt with "griefers" like them before, and has avatars with
safety protocols disengaged to deal with them. The PCs will have to
learn how to hack their avatars to be able to fight back, take out the
cyberguards, then talk some sense into the boy they're trying to rescue.
As a modern adventure, the game takes place at a "cafe", where
players sit back in specially made sofas looking up at large 3-d
displays and taking "herbal drinks" (that are drugged) that enhance the
experience. Again a physical conversation with the boy is impossible
and the PCs must enter the fictional world of the game to make contact
with him. And again, cyber-warriors in the game will try to stop them
and are capable of inflicting real damage, thanks to the PCs' drugged
state making everything seem real. Here, rather than hacking
the game for better chances in combat, the PCs realizing they are being
drugged and either getting off the substances, or spiking the guards'
cocktails will help even the odds.
Either way, once their client's son is free, he tasks them to go after the game's servers, taking it offline, permanently.

The Hook It is October, 1867. For weeks, street people have turning up dead in Whitechapel. Most have turned a blind eye to the deaths of these impoverished few, even though the natures of their deaths are so outlandish. These aren't slashings, shootings or beatings. The victims have been found missing their hearts. This is no surgical removal, either; the organs have been ripped from their rib cages with force. But last night, a well-to-do merchant off of Cooper's Row was found murdered in a similar fashion. Now the middle-class have taken notice of these deaths, and are demanding an investigation. Scotland Yard refuses to look into them, for reasons unstated (but rumours are the order came down from Buckingham). They are, however, willing to put together a special team to investigate the matter. 4. Geek Week Chris was pretty busy, geek-wise lately. He finished Fallout 3 and thought the ending rather fitting with the story even though it's rather abrupt. He also started playing Fable 2, which is a lot of fun. He got out to the movies and saw My Bloody Valentine 3D which he did a review of on our site. He's glad to finally have Supernatural back on again. But the big highlight for Chris was finally starting up the Dark Heresy campaign that's been in the talks now for a few months. Also check out the trailer for a new Tim Burton film called 9 it's another animated movie. Rob got into the beta for Champions Online and though he's restricted by an NDA. He also started playing a 14-day trial of City of Heroes just for comparison. David picked up Mortal Kombat vs DC for the PS3 and considers it awesome. In addition, he's started a project in LittleBigPlanet, attempting to build a simple Tower Defense game. He's been working with his fiancee on a client's website and now has a passing mastery of how to make Google Maps work for me. 2. The Hook(somewhat riffed off of Lobo's Paramilitary Christmas Special) The Easter Bunny is tired of being second-best to Christmas, so he hires the PCs to take out Santa Claus in order for him to rule over the Holidays. The PCs travel to the North Pole only to find that Santa's Workshop (which should actually be called "Santa's Sweatshop") is heavily guarded by Kalashnikov-wielding elves, jet-powered reindeer with flame throwers and the jolly fat man himself who is ready to rain down hot lead on any intruder. However - it turns out that the PCs were expected and Santa wants to parley with them regarding a counter offer. 4. Podcast NewsWhat could be going on? Does Santa want the PCs to work for him? Sat, 6 December 2008 ![]() WARNING: Instances of very strong language may offend some listeners. Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music 1. Geek Week Fraser wants you to know all about The Midnight Charity Project. We are in the season of giving! Without the Monarch Comics Briefing, Fraser wouldn't know what's going on in comics, and he certainly wouldn't know that Warren Ellis is writing the Astonishing X-Men. Fraser follows Immortal Iron Fist faithfully, and he really enjoyed Northlanders. If anyone cares, Fraser's True20 Vikings campaign journal is on line. He'll try to keep that up to date. A couple of articles already exist. Chuck's working on an RPG using the setting from his web-novel, Hellstrom Voyage. The conversation continues at Narrative Control. 2. Feature - Getting Modernized With a tip of the hat to Dave! To get out of print games, Chuck recommends Noble Knight. Listen to the novel, Heart of the Hunter. 3. The Hook So, let's say we know we have a player who digs superhero comics, a player who digs Indiana Jones, and a player who digs James Bond.
All are great modern concepts, and if you mash them up, you might be
able to entice all three players into a modern game. Let's call it
"Planetary Jones, International Men of Mystery." Planetary
is a comic by--you guessed it--Warren Ellis that follows a group
of "Archaeologists of the Impossible", tracking down the world's secret
history. They are also superheroes, but not the kind with colourful
costumes. That hits our superhero quotient. We're going to change Planetary and turn them into a group of super-spies in the 1950s, possibly even run by MI-6--very James Bond.
This team goes up again a resurgent Nazi threat based in Argentina that
is trying to acquire occult items of power in order to create an
unstoppable army and usher in the Fourth Reich. And there we have our Indiana Jones angle. You could even fashion the Nazi menace as a kind of riff on SPECTRE or SMERSH, to further the JB quotient. And, of course, their first mission might be the team trying to recover the Blutfahne. The History of Rome Returns! I've spoken about the History of Rome podcast
before, and when I did, the updates stopped coming. I hope I'm not
jinxing this by letting you all know there are new episodes, and they
are maintaining the level of quality I remember. The website has moved
to thehistoryofrome.typepad.com. In case you didn't know, the History of Rome is
a weekly podcast tracing the history of the Roman Empire, beginning
with Aeneas's arrival in Italy and ending (someday) with the exile of
Romulus Augustulus, last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. That website again is thehistoryofrome.typepad.com 5. Geek Week Chuck's been writing a board game called Dungeon Dwellers, and RPG Objects is going all printified with Amazon BookSurge Fraser is hyped by the new Star Trek Trailer at Apple Trailers and is looking forward to his Viking True20 game. You can read the campaign journal if you really are that bored. 2. Feature - Wars and Rumours of Wars Are the PCs involved in the Siege of Mafeking or are maybe meeting Winston Churchill during the Second Boer War In World War I, you could run games set in the Arab Revolt, there's espionage, or you could go the alt-history Soldiers and Spellfighters route. Commandos, SAS or the Red Orchestra (perhaps attempting to retrieve the Blutfahne) during World War II The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG), riverine warfare, or just plain weird stuff (like the Korean movie R-Point) in the Vietnam War. Did you just rediscover beer? Time to discover Return to Northmoor. 3. The Hook What if the PCs are part of an SAS team (one of the Special Raiding Squadrons) in Italy in Aug/Sept 1943, only to intercept information that Otto Skorzeny, famed German commando, is in the area. This would be near Gran Sasso d'Italia, a mountain located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Mussolini is being held at Campo Imperatore. The actual rescue of Mussolini by Skorzeny took place on Sept 12, but can your SRS foil Skorzeny's attempt? Perhaps even capture the German hero? Heart of the Hunter Completed. If you want to contact us, you can email us at accidental@swordsedgepublishing.ca Heart of the Hunter, Sam Chupp's fantasy novel, is now complete. Sam describes this novel as being in the style of Steven Brust's Jhereg novels, using pastiches and cognates of real-world cultures in order to convey a sense of culture and place. You can listen to the novel over at heartofthehunter.com Veni Vidi Venatus The fine gentlemen over at Spooky Outhouse Productions are organizing something they call "One Shotter Day", or Veni Vidi Venatus (I came, I saw, I gamed), which is a day which several gaming stores will be offering one-shots of various RPGs and board games.
