A. Master Plan

Master Plan is an podcast on the subject of game design and the art of ideas, particularly for role playing, card and board games. Hosted by freelance writer Ryan Macklin, the podcast comes out at least once a month. You can expect interviews with game designers -- both professional and amateur -- as well as advice and news about game design.

Check it out at masterplanpodcast.net.

B. Happy Birthday Tome Show!
The Tome Show has turned one year old, and I didn't even send a card! It's up to 34 episodes, so I guess it's a bit more regular than us. Maybe more fibre in the diet of pure D&D. For those of you not in the know, the Tome Show is a Dungeons and Dragons news, review, and interview show. Jeff, the Tome Host, and the Tome Reporters tell you about what is going on in the world of D&D. You can find it at www.thetomeshow.com.

4. The Hook
This week, I want to provide a hook to lead into a gritty, conspiracy campaign. It's shamelessly stolen from the first two episodes on the new season of the Unit.

The characters belong to a special operations force, perhaps Delta, perhaps JTF-2 or the SAS. They might even belong to something blacker, like the Increment or the CIA Special Activities Division. On their first adventure, they are tasked with escorting a spook on an "interdiction" mission against a drug kingpin's complex. The target doesn't look very drug complex-like—in fact it looks like a very nice home with large grounds. During the mission, the team is confronted by an individual whom the spook shoots. The spook searches the place and cracks a safe, all the time deflecting questions from the team—if they ask any.

On return, the team is called before a government oversight committee. It turns out, the “drug kingpin was the defence minister of a government on poor terms with the PCs' government. Their superiors deny any knowledge of the mission, indicating that the team went rogue. The PCs are hung out to dry and it looks like they are going to do prison time. Their commanding officer, who was left out in the cold as much as the team, orders them to evade arrest and go underground. He's going to take the heat and the PCs need to figure out what is going on.

The truth is that the team have been chosen to take the fall for an operation undertaken by a shadow government conspiracy. The mission was an intelligence operation to retrieve important information from the unfriendly government that the conspiracy feared might be used against them. That information could lead the team to the people behind the conspiracy, could clear their names, and ensure their CO doesn't end up in prison.

The campaign has the team following clues and getting closer and closer to the heart of the conspiracy. Finally, they are able to take out the heads of the conspiracy. Like a snake, the shadow government dies, but the team can't go back out into the open after that. They become an arm's length black ops team, contractors for their government, doing dirty-work but only when they are sure the aims are righteous. It's kind of like the Unit meets the A-Team.

5. Podcast News
A. The End of the Round Table and Misfit Brew

The House of the Harping Monkey is a little bit quieter and less crowded with the demise of two much-beloved podcasts, the Round Table and Misfit Brew. Mick Bradley was involved in both, and with him on the Round Table was Chris Miller and K J Johnston. The Round Table especially will be missed, though Misfit Brew was a great podcast, the Round Table was one of my 'must listen' podcasts. I wouldn't put it in a queue to listen to, I would listen to it as soon as I downloaded it. It's a sad day, but all the participants will be visible in the Podosphere and in the RPG community. Maybe we can actually coerce them onto the Accidental Survivors at some point.

The deal for Mundus Novit: the Changed World fell through as Silven Publishing closed up shop, but Fraser is polishing it up and seeing about a partnership with another publisher to get it out.

B) Monarch Comic Briefing
The Monarch Comics Briefing is one of the podcasts from those guys over at Fist Full of Comics and Games. It's got Tangent (Victor) and Ed from the Monarch Comics store. I'm not collecting comics any more, but I'm very interested in them and I still pick up a few. This podcast keeps me up to date, and has really opened my eyes regarding some titles I otherwise would have missed. Just one thing: I haven't heard them mention Nextwave, Agents of HATE. This may pose a problem. You can find the podcast at http://www.fistfullofcomics.com/podcasts/category/monarch-comics-briefing/

Hosted by Daniel M. Perez, The Digital Front is a podcast that addresses the e-distributed tabletop gaming market, one of the fastest growing segments of the gaming industry. The show features news from e-publishers and e-retailers, as well as anything having to do with the market; interviews with publishers and retailers doing business in the e-distributed gaming market; reviews of digital gaming products for tabletop gaming done by ex-RPGnow Staff Reviewer Mark Gedak; and general editorials exploring the state of this segment of the industry, and where it is headed.

The show is scheduled to release new episodes on a bi-weekly basis, with the occassional bonus episode from time to time. The podcast is being produced by Highmoon Media Productions, a media studio and publisher of roleplaying games also owned by Mr. Perez.

b) The Return of DLI
One of the originals, the Dragon's Landing Inn is back with episode Chupa 83. The episode includes a new segment called the Dragon’s Landing IndieBrew, in which Chris Perrin from the Canon Puncture podcast will be providing semi-regular reviews of the best in Indie Games.

This is stolen directly from Nextwave: Agents of HATE, but it also has a touch of the Nick Fury vs. SHIELD mini-series: Your group is part of a government covert (or overt) detachment assigned to ferreting out an evil terrorist plot. You are far more successful than anyone anticipates, and you actually uncover the power behind the plot: it's the very organization for which you work.
The organization may have been have been infiltrated long ago and slowly turned to become a tool of the terrorists, or perhaps the terrorist group is a creation of your organization, either wittingly to increase funding and support from the government or unwittingly as a black propaganda project that went wrong. Whatever the case, your bosses are the ones also running the badguys. Now, in order to stop a fiendish terrorist plot, your group has to go underground, use your organizations' assets against it, and destroy this threat to world peace.

Covert Forces Redux has entered the editing stage. The pics have been compiled. Once the editing is finished, it'll head to layout and you should be seeing it in the second quarter of this year.

Work has begun on Election Day, an adventure for release through the "Modern Dispatch" subscription package, and through SEP. This is a short adventure set in Albenistan.

The writer of Treasure Chest Unlocked: Gems, Craig Churchill, has handed in some rough drafts for Treasure Chest Unlocked: Incense. It is still in the early stages, but all indications are promising.

5. Podcast News
A) Gamer Traveler Begins!
Daniel Perez of Highmoon Media, a role-playing game publisher, has re-started the Gamer Traveler podcast. Now, this used to be a section on Dragon's Landing Inn, and it was always a lot of fun. Now it's on its own. Episode 0--an introduction--and Episode 1--on Warwick Castle--are up. Go have a listen. I'm subscribing to this one. It's great. It's a one man podcast, but Daniel is an animated host and he maintains a good pace, or else he puts a lot of time into editing. Whatever the case, its great fun to listen to and a definite quality podcast. You can find it at www.thegamertraveler.com

B) 2006 Geekies Awards at GeeksOn
Geeks On, the podcast about all things geekie, has had their second annual Geekies awards, voted on through their forums. Not only are there awards for best animated movie, best actor, and best geek TV show, but also hottest actress and actor. The voting is done, but the podcast itself includes the hosts' picks and lots of banter about the various categories. Geeks On is always fun and this is a good introduction if you've never listened before. Check it out at geekson.com

Got the recording of episode 8 done, tentatively titled "Chainmail Bikini," for reasons explicated in the show. Unfortunately, I (Fraser) have had a busy week. My wife and I are buying a house, and my sister and her family dropped by a day earlier than planned--so the time I had set aside for editing disappeared. The new episode should be up next week.

This is the one without the witty banter, without the other hosts, and with Fraser blabbing on forever about resources he uses in his game (like anyone would care). No edits. No format. No worries.
