Fri, 27 March 2009 ![]() Presentation: 10/10 Gameplay: 8/10 Fun Factor: 8/10 Total Score: 26/30 Sometimes it doesn't take long for an idea to catch on. Looking
at Blue Dragon Plus for the Nintendo DS, it sure seems that a trend has
formed of RPG games branching into the strategy genre. And
why not? Final Fantasy Tactics has been such a success its become its
own cottage industry. Final Fantasy XII sported a real-time strategy
sequel for the DS called Revenant Wings and now Blue Dragon has a RTS
sequel of its own in Blue Dragon Plus. Like its predecessors, Blue Dragon Plus offers a mix of real-time strategy and RPG elements. The
overall presentation is top-notch both during play and during the
game's cinematics. The game boasts a sountrack by Final Fantasy legend
Nobuo Uematsu and character designs by Akira Toriyama (character
designer for Dragon Ball Z and the Dragon Quest series). The
control scheme is simple enough that the game can be controlled with
the stylus alone, selecting units by touch, selecting a destination (or
target) and choosing between magical abilities are easy to get the hang
of, though sometimes the small screen makes things a little confusing
during the heat of battle. Still, the characters are
distinctive enough that you can tell them apart, even though they're
quite small and the game does a good job of walking you through the
early missions, which are played with a smaller party of more
generalized characters. For someone like me, who prefers
his strategy in turns and not real-time, this was a welcome
introduction to the game and made it easy to get involved in the
action. The game's tutorial missions also spell out quite clearly what
the roles of the various characters are- who should be wading into
melee and who should hiding behind them to throw spells. Although
the game sports a few dedicated spellcasters, including an elemental
"artillery" caster and healer, almost all the characters have a special
spell-like ability to inflict elemental damage, usually in an area.
Some of these attacks strike in a line while others affect an area.
Once an ability is used, there's a "cool down" period in real time
before a special ability can be used again. Blue Dragon
Plus packs a lot of fun gameplay into its 30-hour single player
campaign. Your characters gain levels and can find items to increase
their abilities. Each character has a unique feel and has a role to
fill and the maps where the battles take place are large and allow
plenty of room for maneuvering. The levels are well designed and give you plenty of chances to use the terrain to your advantage. Blue
Dragon Plus is an engaging game for gamers of all ages. In addition to
playing the game myself, I loaned it to my neice, a 12 year-old
dedicated gamer who has beaten Final Fantasy X-2 and the Kingdom Hearts
games more times than I can count (more times than me for sure). Like
me, she enjoyed the game and was drawn in by its cute character
designs, which she immediately recognized as "by that Dragon Quest
guy". If you are a fan of strategy games, especially on
handheld platforms where they seem particularly strong right now, or if
you are a fan of old-school Japanese RPGs, you should definitely check
out Blue Dragon Plus. Chuck. Category: Review -- posted at: 10:22 AM Comments[0] |

Mass Media like Bubblegum Crisis, Blade Runner, and Ghost in the Shell 3. The Hook Dark Cauldron: A hook for a modern or cyberpunk game, submitted by Chuck. Dark Cauldron is the latest craze in online interactive gaming. In
fact, it's so interactive and addictive that one client, a wealthy
billionaire, wants you to take extreme measures to get his son away
from the game, which he calls a cult.
As a cyberpunk adventure, the game takes place in cyberspace and
the PCs will jack in remotely and attempt a rescue as fantasy avatars
of their normal personas. They will find that the company that runs the
game has dealt with "griefers" like them before, and has avatars with
safety protocols disengaged to deal with them. The PCs will have to
learn how to hack their avatars to be able to fight back, take out the
cyberguards, then talk some sense into the boy they're trying to rescue.
As a modern adventure, the game takes place at a "cafe", where
players sit back in specially made sofas looking up at large 3-d
displays and taking "herbal drinks" (that are drugged) that enhance the
experience. Again a physical conversation with the boy is impossible
and the PCs must enter the fictional world of the game to make contact
with him. And again, cyber-warriors in the game will try to stop them
and are capable of inflicting real damage, thanks to the PCs' drugged
state making everything seem real. Here, rather than hacking
the game for better chances in combat, the PCs realizing they are being
drugged and either getting off the substances, or spiking the guards'
cocktails will help even the odds.
Either way, once their client's son is free, he tasks them to go after the game's servers, taking it offline, permanently.

Most have turned a blind eye to the deaths of these impoverished few, even though the natures of their deaths are so outlandish. These aren't slashings, shootings or beatings. The victims have been found missing their hearts. This is no surgical removal, either; the organs have been ripped from their rib cages with force. But last night, a well-to-do merchant off of Cooper's Row was found murdered in a similar fashion. Now the middle-class have taken notice of these deaths, and are demanding an investigation. Scotland Yard refuses to look into them, for reasons unstated (but rumours are the order came down from Buckingham). Sat, 17 January 2009 The Accidental Survivors Podcast is holding a contest for modern gaming ideas, sponsored by RPG Objects. Mon, 22 December 2008 ![]() Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music Too long for bloopers, too crappy for the actual podcast, Fraser took a bunch of stuff from the cutting room floor and shoved it into your MP3 player. Chris said it was all golden. Let's see how golden that might be. This is worse than most Accidental Survivors podcasts, so if you value your sanity at all, you'll walk away. Do not play this around people, even if they don't speak English. The profanity and insanity will infect even those who can't comprehend this pure horror. Oh, and do I need to say Not Safe For Work? Geek Week Dave came along via recording to let us know that since we last met, he's become an Assistant Manager in Training at EB Games (store #1700, Queen st. & Airport rd. Brampton, if anyone wants to see a real live podcast-person) fighting off angry mothers desparate for Wii's and Wii Fit's. He's still playing some LittleBigPlanet, as well as Ana's Christmas gift, a JRPG called Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Also nearly finished a great Capcom story game on the DS, Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice. He's getting buried in Twitter messages thanks to TweetDeck, struggling financially to make ends meet, and being a human pincushion for his three cats. Fraser's got his True20 Viking campaign going well. His Snowflake Project with Jonathan Holmberg is moving forward. And if you are looking for Geek Gifts, check out 10 Holiday Gaming Gifts for under $20 from RPG Blog II. Chris is getting prepped for starting up a Dark Heresy game he'll be running. He got a free 4 pack of beer from Moosehead for Christmas - yay BEER! (Moosehead, last of the "big" Canadian beers). He watched Death Race , and says it didn't suck. He says Role Models is fantastic and Zack and Miri Make a Porno is also really good. We disturbed him while he was praying that Dog Soldiers 2: Fresh Meat finally gets some forward momentum. The Hook(somewhat riffed off of Lobo's Paramilitary Christmas Special) The Easter Bunny is tired of being second-best to Christmas, so he hires the PCs to take out Santa Claus in order for him to rule over the Holidays. The PCs travel to the North Pole only to find that Santa's Workshop (which should actually be called "Santa's Sweatshop") is heavily guarded by Kalashnikov-wielding elves, jet-powered reindeer with flame throwers and the jolly fat man himself who is ready to rain down hot lead on any intruder. However - it turns out that the PCs were expected and Santa wants to parley with them regarding a counter offer. 4. Podcast NewsWhat could be going on? Does Santa want the PCs to work for him? Could it be that E. Bunny has something more nefarious up his sleeve? And how are they going to get all of this resolved before Christmas Eve? Won't somebody think about the children?! A Cthulu Christmas! The Yog-Sothoth Christmas show is out and features an interview with Mark Barrowcliffe, author of 'The Elfish Gene'. Listener Poll: After the commentary track we did for the 13th Warrior at Gen Con, we've had some listeners ask us if we're going to do another one. That's lead to a discussion about what the movie we would do a commentary track for. There have been some suggestions, but we want to leave it up to you, the listeners, to choose what movie we're going to do the commentary track for. Here's the list, so choose one and email us at accidental@swordsedgepublishing.ca or go to www.accidentalsurvivors.com. Sat, 6 December 2008 ![]() WARNING: Instances of very strong language may offend some listeners. Accidental Survivors: the Modern Gaming Podcast All music in podcast by Mindscape Music 1. Geek Week Fraser wants you to know all about The Midnight Charity Project. We are in the season of giving! Without the Monarch Comics Briefing, Fraser wouldn't know what's going on in comics, and he certainly wouldn't know that Warren Ellis is writing the Astonishing X-Men. Fraser follows Immortal Iron Fist faithfully, and he really enjoyed Northlanders. If anyone cares, Fraser's True20 Vikings campaign journal is on line. He'll try to keep that up to date. A couple of articles already exist. Chuck's working on an RPG using the setting from his web-novel, Hellstrom Voyage. The conversation continues at Narrative Control. 2. Feature - Getting Modernized With a tip of the hat to Dave! To get out of print games, Chuck recommends Noble Knight. Listen to the novel, Heart of the Hunter. 3. The Hook So, let's say we know we have a player who digs superhero comics, a player who digs Indiana Jones, and a player who digs James Bond.
All are great modern concepts, and if you mash them up, you might be
able to entice all three players into a modern game. Let's call it
"Planetary Jones, International Men of Mystery." Planetary
is a comic by--you guessed it--Warren Ellis that follows a group
of "Archaeologists of the Impossible", tracking down the world's secret
history. They are also superheroes, but not the kind with colourful
costumes. That hits our superhero quotient. We're going to change Planetary and turn them into a group of super-spies in the 1950s, possibly even run by MI-6--very James Bond.
This team goes up again a resurgent Nazi threat based in Argentina that
is trying to acquire occult items of power in order to create an
unstoppable army and usher in the Fourth Reich. And there we have our Indiana Jones angle. You could even fashion the Nazi menace as a kind of riff on SPECTRE or SMERSH, to further the JB quotient. And, of course, their first mission might be the team trying to recover the Blutfahne. The History of Rome Returns! I've spoken about the History of Rome podcast
before, and when I did, the updates stopped coming. I hope I'm not
jinxing this by letting you all know there are new episodes, and they
are maintaining the level of quality I remember. The website has moved
to thehistoryofrome.typepad.com. In case you didn't know, the History of Rome is
a weekly podcast tracing the history of the Roman Empire, beginning
with Aeneas's arrival in Italy and ending (someday) with the exile of
Romulus Augustulus, last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. That website again is thehistoryofrome.typepad.com 5.
